Want to find out what the best audiobooks are? Not sure what to spend your money on?

Before I begin –

This is probably going to end up being one big advertisement for Audible.

I can’t help it – I absolutely love everything about them. I’ve been using them for about 2 years now and have listened to some absolutely fab audiobooks through them.

You’ll also notice a trend with this – I listen to a lot of post-apocalyptic books.

And let’s begin –

Best Audiobooks - Bird Box

1: Bird Box by Josh Malerman

Something is out there….
Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Why is it one of the best audiobooks?

It is such an interesting concept – a creature that nobody can look directly at as doing so would send a person into a murderous and deadly rage, lashing out at anyone around you and even yourself. The idea that you’re essentially forced to live in a world of darkness as to open your eyes outside would lead to your end.

Best Audiobooks - Girl With All The Gifts2: The Girl With All The Gifts by M.R. Carey

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her “our little genius”.

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.

Why is it one of the best audiobooks?

I love zombie books. Yes, before it became cool. I’m a Zombie hipster, I know, I know. And this is one that stands atop among the rest. Despite the setting, it is probably one of the more grounded of the genre. In this, we’re introduced to the character of Melanie – she appears to be a normal young girl — only she is far from it. If you’re not interested in the audiobook, you should definitely watch the excellent movie!

Honourable mention goes to Carey’s other book, Fellside.

Best Audiobooks - The Remaining

3: The Remaining (Series) by D.J. Molles

In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts.

Why is it one of the best audiobooks?

Yes, another Zombie book. But I absolutely adore this series. In these kinds of books, you end up with people with supposedly no skills being these total badasses (not that I can say much – I barely know where I am most of the time!), but in this, we have someone who has specifically been trained for this purpose. What I especially love about it is that he gets hurt, he gets injured, and he isn’t completely rock hard. Think… Die Hard meets 28 Days Later (which is someone described it as on an Audible review and I am totally stealing now).

There are currently 6 books in the series and I’m just waiting for Molles to hurry up and bring out the 7th! This is also one of the best audiobooks because of the narration.

Honourable mention goes to his other book, Wolves.

Best Audiobooks - One Second After4: One Second After by William R. Forstchen

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real.

Why is it one of the best audiobooks?

I love this book because it is probably one of the most believable books on my list so far, One Second After paints the picture of what would happen to America/the world after a cataclysmal EMP attack that takes the country back to the middle ages – it also makes you realize just how much you rely on anything electrical in your life and just how many people are affected if it suddenly.. goes. In a similar style to The Remaining, we’re introduced to a protagonist who isn’t infallible, who makes mistakes and lives with the consequences.

Best Audiobooks - Boy Who Drew Monsters5: Boy Who Drew Monsters by Keith Donohue

Ever since he nearly drowned in the ocean three years earlier, 10-year-old Jack Peter Keenan has been deathly afraid to venture outdoors. Refusing to leave his home in a small coastal town in Maine, Jack Peter spends his time drawing monsters. When those drawings take on a life of their own, no one is safe from the terror they inspire.

Why is it one of the best audiobooks?

Shock horror. A book that isn’t set in a post-apocalyptic world. Instead, it has paranormal and mystery undertones. For me, personally, I could relate to what the little boy goes through and it echoes some of my own experiences, apart from the whole being attacked by monsters thing, of course.

And this concludes my post. 5 of the best audiobooks that you should listen to right now. What ones have I missed? What was your favourite? Drop me an email to dan@nobetterdan.com and let me know!
