Did you know that the first step to clearing your mind should be learning how to breathe properly? It can really help reduce your anxiety, stress, and calm your mind. It only takes a few minutes to complete and you’ll notice the effects almost immediately.
First – find somewhere quiet that you can sit, lie down, or even just stand still. Preferably somewhere you won’t be disturbed for the duration of this breathing practice. Make yourself as comfortable as you can – remember, the whole idea behind this is to calm your mind. You don’t want your focus to keep going back to how uncomfortable you’re feeling.
Now, it’s time to start breathing.
- Breathe in and imagine the breath flowing right down to your belly as comfortably as you can – nothing about this practice should be forced
- If you can, you should try breathing in through your nose and not your mouth. Some people can’t, so stick with what makes you feel comfortable
- Hold that breath in your belly for a 5 count if you can – but hold for as long as you’re able. Remember, stay comfortable!
- When you reach the 5 count, or however long you can, breathe out through your mouth. It feels super satisfying if you release an audible breath of air through your mouth
- Continue this for about 3 – 5 minutes
When you’ve finished this breathing technique, take stock of how you’re feeling. You should feel an immediate calming of your mind.
